In other news, I’m spending today babysitting Aly’s children. Currently they are downstairs watching Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. One of them is wearing swim goggles. It should be an interesting day…
So, a little while ago Sam told me that he was in a book club, and invited me to join. He asked me to read A Fraction of The Whole by Steve Toltz and informed me that this was a club formed by Gillian (whom I had not met, at that point) and her sister, Trish. He told me that I should read the book and he would tell me when we were meeting to talk about it.
Being the nerdy girl I am I was very interested in this idea. I had secretly always wanted to be a part of a book club. I envisioned smartly dressed people, sitting around a perfectly decorated living room, sipping wine and eating canapes and talking about symbolism and metaphor and generally feeling superior. Unfortunately this never materialized. I can’t point fingers since I’m not entirely sure who I would point at, but the meeting never happened. I guess everyone got too busy or no one committed to a date, but we never talked about A Fraction Of The Whole, which is probably for the best, since I never read it. I found it terribly boring. At a later date I spoke with Gill about it and she went on at length about how much she enjoyed it but even from her description Im not sure it would have been a book I would have enjoyed. Still though, I was much more interested in it after having spoken with Gillian, even after having discarded it previously.
I have been considering re-instituting the book club. Choosing a book, setting a date, inviting my friends and maybe even setting up another blog to document our adventures in reading. Actually, I think it would be really interesting to be able to set up the blog and maybe inspire others to have their own meetings, and converse about it on our blog. We’ll see how it goes, but here’s the truth – we probably wont be smartly dressed, the living rooms will be a mishmash of hand-me-down furniture interspersed with our own purchases and pictures of our friends, conversation will be less about symbolism and more about celebrity gossip and instead of canapes we will likely have chips and dip, but one things for sure, there will be wine. Lots of it.
